FUFC TOURNAMENT 2008
Following a slow start, losing their first game 2 – 1 to a team from Worplesdon, the Hawks went on an unbeaten surge to win the morning under 9 tournament at Monkton Lane on Saturday 17th May. With a team consisting of Bishop, Currie, Cocks, Marshall , Hayes, Smitherman, Larby and Warner, they in typical Hawks fashion started slowly, or was it just keeping the opponents guessing? From the 2nd game on, a narrow 1 -0 victory against Teddington Stags, they then dispatched Aldershot Boys with ease, winning 3 -1.
This resulted in the Hawks finishing 2nd behind Worplesdon and awaiting the outcome of the other pool to see who we might face in the semi-finals, could it be the Foxes, the Falcons or a team from Liphook. As it panned out Liphook won their group meaning that the Foxes went through in 2nd place, thus avoiding a show down.
So with a semi-final draw of Liphook Utd vs Farnham Hawks and Farnham Foxes vs Worplesdon Phoenix, Farnham was hopeful of getting both teams into the finals, and neither failed to deliver. The Foxes completely outplayed Worplesdon beating them 3 -1, whilst the Hawks scrapped a narrow victory against Liphook winning 1 – 0.
The stage was set Foxes vs Hawks in the final.
With only 10 minutes in which to play, both teams started well and like to boxers, with the ball being punched in both directions. Space was at a premium as both teams settled into their normal passing styles with both keepers being well protected by some excellent defending. At halftime the score was level at 0 – 0, with the concentration etched on the face of every player and the nerves getting to each and every parent. Both sides introduced a couple of changes and the game re-started. First blood came to the Hawks with a jinking run and pass from Marshall setting up Larby for his first of the day. With the Foxes now pressing the 2nd came a minute later with Bishop rolling the ball out to Currie, who went on an excellent run down the entire right side of the pitch, and then crossing a defence splitting ball to Larby to slide in a score a wonderful 2nd.
This seemed to knock the wind out of the Foxes, and whilst they again showed that never say die attitude the clock beat them. 2 – 0 to the Hawks it finished.”
