Well done! and thanks to all who took part
Farnham United Football Club is now one of the most well supported clubs in the area, with circa 290 playing members representing the club in both the Surrey and
North Hant’s leagues and with members from the age of 5 through to adult and now thanks to Carlo Bruno 2 under 12 girls teams.
Run entirely by volunteers, many of whom carryout a number of roles within the club, the committee is now keen to create a new position for someone to join the running of the club through taking on, what we consider to be, the vital position of Communications Secretary.
The principle responsibility of this position is to sit with the committee, once a month, and then to produce a news letter that will be sent to all parents outlining all matters of importance, for example Coaching sessions that are being run, Workshops or tournaments that members might be interested in knowing more about.
In terms of your experience, well its like most of us, you will need a genuine enthusiasm to help promote and enhance the running of the club to benefit all of the boys and girls that get so much enjoyment out of it.Ideally you will access to a computer, be fairly MS Word literate and be able to spare about 3 hours of your time once a month on a Tuesday evening to attend a committee meeting, normally somewhere dry, warm and with plenty of tea / coffee.
This is a new position and as such we are looking for the person to add their own style and flair, but more importantly help the club communicate through all levels of the club.If you would like to know more about this position or feel that you have other idea’s and suggestions, then please do not hesitate to contact Alan Sephton (Chairman) at alan.sephton@openreach.co.uk or on 07850 713526.

REALmadras update 2008
23.04.08
With only 5 players including 3 debutants, the mighty Madras set forth with trepidation against old foe Crookham Five in the new league season.
After we got over the shock of Carlo's new haircut, and were all relieved to find that his goalkeeping skills remained intact, we set about opposition with a new fluid formation - after about 5 minutes even Carlo gave up suggesting that we man-mark as it clearly was not part of the game plan for this new team that didn't even know each other's names!
Cliff opened the scoring early on with some deft footwork and a hint of speed, both of which belied his 'barn-door' meets Mike Tindall rugby appearance, whilst our other forward debutant, Andrew, increasingly gained confidence and ran with pace and skill at their defence, ultimately scoring two and making several more.
Never behind, we led 4-3 at the interval before pulling ahead comfortably to win 10-6 (am sure it was even more!) as they tired despite being the only team with a sub! This in itself was quite a feat since the 2nd half saw the oxygen tent being wheeled on to resuscitate Cliff who was out of necessity having to resort to that old rugby tactic of an explosive 10 second burst of action followed by a 5 minute motionless wait for the ball!
Anyhow, the star of the day was undoubtedly our 3rd new signing (picked up on a free from 'Enter Me Gran') James who was a mix of Patrick Vierra, John Terry and Roy Keane, with a Peter Lorimer shot. Yes... be very afraid. He claimed 6 goals (and I wasn't going to argue) although I'm sure I managed at least two as well.
So, this week, 9.00 Wednesday against Rodney Rovers who started their league with a 14-2 win!

Saving our best performance to last, we thumped Indoor Milan 9-3, although at only 2-1 half-time the match was much closer than the final score suggests. Against a team that we had succumbed to in the reverse fixture, when the wizardry of their star player Zakk had embarassed both Carlo and myself on a couple of occasions, the trickery was not to be repeated. Perhaps all the more surprising given we only had 5 regular players, and with Daz, Matt and Chris all wanting to play goal-hanger, Carlo and Ian were anticipating a busy night! We were also supported by a guest performance by a young 16 year old Dan who did score but then got crocked.
But need we have worried...Chris reassured us he would hold back and mark Zakk all night....hhmmm...that lasted about one minute before goal hero number one went off in search of another hat-trick. Matt played so well that 1st Soccer guru Craig had to concede that Matt HAD used his right foot this week, although to suggest that it played any part in his hat-trick was gross exaggeration. Not to be outdone, Daz, showing admirable restraint to keep his eyes away from the posse of beauties supporting the opposition, finally shook off the various injuries that had earlier thwarted his Anfield dreams, and was back in top form with his own hat-trick. The pick of his goals being a mazy 5 minute run across the face of our own goal, behind me, through three people's legs and tucked beautifully into the bottom corner, all whilst ignoring at least 6 calls for the easy-option ball rolled to the guy wide open on goal - hey, but that's what the oppo were expecting!!
And lets not forget, we were behind 1-0 and the during a very tight first half Carlo pulled off a number of top corner finger-tip saves plus some excellent blocks coming off his line. We must also not forget that as the second half progressed we pressed better and better, right from the front, giving them no passing room at all. As Craig mentions in his report, Zakk was 'shackled'.

A very tough and bloody niggly game saw us win 6-4 against Crookham 5, and lift ourselves in to 2nd position with one week remaining.
The starting 5 were as last week (Carlo, Tom, Matt, Chris and Ian) with Leigh on the bench, making a long awaited return to action after injury. A very slow start from Madras saw us 2-0 down mid-way through the first half; our two 'goal-happy young-bucks' from last week were clearly just waiting to be fed goals on a plate rather than working back this side of the half way line, whilst your skipper almost bagged two in the basket ball net rather than testing their keeper!
Leigh had obviously seen enough and came on to turn things around - brilliant substitution I'd say. Anyhow, we edged back into the game and held a narrow 3-2 half time lead, thanks to goals from Chris, Tom and an own goal. Having explained to the 'boys' that a full court press was required, and that they both can't play like Daz, we put much more pressure on the oppo 2nd half - defending from the front!
Carlo having pulled off some blinders in the 1st half, decided to give them one back early in the 2nd, clearly blind or just colour-blind to their man standing 5 yards from him, who accepted the pass with grace and a deadly finish.
As the tension mounted, so did the heat, and both Matt and Chris almost getting themselves sin-binned for bravely asking guys twice their age to step outside! Thankfully, 'cool-hand' Tom and 'whats the fuss' Leigh kept their heads, and with your skipper finding his range 2nd half with two long range efforts, we edged ahead. Chris added his 2nd and we were home and dry, however Carlo still needed to pull off a couple of finger tip saves to keep us in front.

With such quality midweek European action (yes...I admit the Gooners did alright!) and an exciting weekend of Cup upsets, I apologise for the late report and notice for this week. However, for those not playing last week, on the edge of your seats waiting for the big result, I can tell you that whilst Real Madrid may be out, the mighty Madras bounce back with a 11-5 mauling of Passed It Thistle.
There may have only been 5 of us on the night (where were you Daz?), and only 4 of us playing for Madras (more later..) but the result was never in doubt even though we only held a 2-0 half time advantage. With Tom and myself keeping it tighter at the back than the cheeks of the onlooking bevvy of beauties, and with no Daz to get distracted by crowd adulation, it was left to Matt and his new recruit, Chris (Daz who?) to run riot - some lovely one touch interplay saw Matt notch 4 and Chris 6 goals.
However, the biggest story of the night was left to our goalie, who has just dropped down the pecking order for the Italian no.1 shirt. Up against an opposite number who was at least the age of Tom and me combined, how did Carlo manage to let him score not once but twice past him?
What are your top three goalkeeping howlers of all time? Calamity James, Bonetti, Sprake, Robinson, Grobellar, the Colombian guy, or any number of Scottish keepers from the 70s/80s? Well time to add the name of Bruno to your list, after he stood aside to let a pathetically taken direct free kick roll gently in to his net on the mistaken belief that it was an indirect free-kick. Aside from the fact that the referees hand was firmly up his nose rather than raised high above his head, the other given away that it wasn't a head height infringement was their player having just picked himself off the floor having been kicked 3 foot in the air.
This generosity has clearly taken the goalkeepers union a step too far.......or maybe a step nearer being described as Scottish.....and an invitation to play in goal for Passed It Thistle.

A great display to knock Crookham Five from 2nd spot. A 7-1 victory though 5 goals in the last 5 minutes doesn't do justice to the tight game.
Without our 'run all day' youngsters Juan and Sam, the Manager cleverly drafted in Matt for his 1st game of this campaign, and full of energy, he kept the tempo going all night.
But the real story of the night was Daz - hero or villain? With the team fighting hard, half -time approaching and still 0-0, the old pro that he is managed to get himself wound up by a couple of the oppo and finds himself in the sin-bin for 5 mins. Down a man, we still hold out valiantly until Carlo decided to take a free-kick from a left back position and rolls it straight to the centre-forward whilst Tom is picking his nose at right back! 0-1.
Anyhow, a happy ending to report, as Daz returns having taken a handful of 'chill-pills' and scores a sublime hat-trick, whilst Carlo redeemed himself with an inspired display of shot-stopping.
Matt (2) Tom and Ian in with the other goals, and whilst Richard is yet to get off the mark, he was astute enough to work out that last week's breathtaking 'one-twos' interplay get reduced to a 'one' when Daz is playing! Johhny was also scoreless this week but didn't get knobbled which makes a change. It should also be noted that our defence has now become the meanest in the league.
23.01.08
After our superb start to the new league last week, we had a disappointing 5-3 loss to league favourites Goals Aloud. Plans to start with the same formation were thrown in to disarray with our star Spaniard (Juan) not arriving until early in the 2nd half. With our young, fit and skilful opponents engaging in a group (of 9, yes 9) training session before the start whilst we still had only 3 players seconds before kick-off, I think we need to re-read that section in the manual on ‘proper preparation’ etc!
We were 3-1 down at half-time, with no subs and Daz playing with one ear to the radio listening for his old team Havant. At least two of the goals were given away cheaply, however some good work and strong tackling from Tom and Johnny, and some agricultural (not yet fit) tackling from Daz made it a keenly contested and spicy match. A couple of blinding saves from Carlo kept us in it, and then Juan arrived to the relief of Daz who went off gasping for air looking for the Havant Boss’ number. So whilst our opponents were revolving fresh legs faster than the Manager’s door at Newcastle , the rest of us fought back strongly in an even 2nd half, vainly looking out for Daz to reappear to give us a breather.
Never quite good enough on the night, but at least if Daz does get an Anfield call up, that should get him a bit fitter for the bigger games at REALmadras.
